UTICA -- In response to a dramatic increase in the demand to provide support and assistance to families in need this holiday season through Operation Sunshine (OpSun), a local businessman and philanthropist is stepping up to ensure that the organization’s current goal of $65,000 is met, and hopefully exceeded.

Frank Giotto, President and CEO of Oriskany-based Fiber Instruments Sales, Inc. (FIS), and the person responsible for erecting the famed Utica Tower that serves as a symbol of the community’s generosity and giving spirit, has pledged to match individual and business donations $2 for every $1 donated to Operation Sunshine, up to $20,000.

Giotto, who serves as chairman of the Utica Tower Board, will officially announce his challenge to the community during a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. at FIS, 161 Clear Road in Oriskany, according to Utica Tower Board member and FIS Director of Public Relations, Mark Cushman.

“The motivation for this challenge arose when Frank read that additional donations are needed in order for Operation Sunshine to reach its goal in time for the upcoming holidays,” Cushman said. “Frank’s challenge is a means of leveraging his generosity in order to encourage others in the community to participate. He wants people to know that their donations, regardless of the amount, will have a decided impact on fundraising efforts, especially when matched at double the amount. This can be a difficult time of year for some folks, and giving of ourselves to help others demonstrates the true spirit of Christmas.”

Operation Sunshine donations can be made by calling the Observer-Dispatch at 315-792-5003, visiting online at opsun.org, or mailing in a check along with the OpSun coupon that’s printed daily in the Observer-Dispatch.
